Function
- Ca+2-independent phospholipase A2
- catalyzes hydrolysis of sn-2 position of glycerophospholipids, PtdSer & to a lower extent PtdCho
- cleaves membrane phospholipids
- inhibited by E-6-bromomethylene-3-1-naphthalenyl-2H- tetrahydropyran-2-one (BEL)
2-lysophosphatidylcholine + H2O <--> glycerophosphocholine + carboxylate
- Optimum pH is 8.0
Structure
contains 1 patatin domain
Compartment

- perinuclear, endoplasmic reticulum & Golgi
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=2
Expression
- expressed in parenchymal tissues including heart, skeletal muscle, placenta, brain, liver & pancreas
- also expressed in bronchial epithelial cells & kidney
- highest expression is observed in skeletal muscle & heart
