perforant pathway

Introduction

One of 2 neural pathways* projecting from the entorhinal cortex to the hippocampus. It is the 1st fiber pathway of the trisynaptic circuit through the hippocampal formation. Fibers originate in layers 2 & 3 of the lateral entorhinal cortex & synapse on granule cell dendrites in the outer 2/3 of the molecular layer of the dentate gyrus & on apical dentrites of pyramidal cells in CA1-3 of the hippocampus.

Long-term potentiation (LTP) is observed in association with the perforant pathway.

So named because if perforates the subiculum.
