Function
- mitochondrial Na+/Ca+2 antiporter
- mediates Ca+-dependent Ca+2 efflux from mitochondria
- regulates rates of glucose-dependent insulin secretion in pancreatic beta-cells during the first phase of insulin secretion:
- acts by mediating efflux of Ca+2 from mitochondrion, thus affecting cytoplasmic Ca+2 responses
- transports Ca+2 in exchange for either Li+ or Na+
- in contrast to other members of the family, its function is independent of K+ Inhibitor: Zn+2
Structure
Compartment
- mitochondrial inner membrane; multi-pass membrane protein
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=2
Expression
- present in pancreatic beta-cells (at protein level)
