• expressed in kidney & retina
• low levels in brain, testis, muscle
• within the retina, expressed in inner segment of photoreceptors, outer & inner nuclear layers & the ganglion cell layer

Pathology

• defects in NYX are the cause of congenital stationary night blindness type 1
