Etiology
- gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- infectious esophagitis
- Candida albicans (most common)
- cytomegalovirus (CMV)
- Herpex simplex vitus (HSV)
- immunosuppressed patients
- medications (see medication-induced esophagitis)
- eosinophilic esophagitis
- Barrett esophagus
Clinical manifestations
- odynophagia is the most common presentation
- oral candidiasis (thrush) suggests infectious esophagitis
- absence of oral lesions does not rule out esophageal candidiasis
Diagnostic procedures
- upper GI endoscopy with brush biopsy & cytology
