- inhibits attack by complement on autologous cells
- binds to C3bBb & C14b2b2a to accelerate decay of C3 convertases
- receptor for CD97

Pathology
- deficient in red blood cells in patients with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria
- receptor for Coxsackie B virus & echovirus
