Function
- multifunctional sorting protein
- controls endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-mitochondria communication, including apposition of mitochondria with the ER & ER homeostasis
- in response to apoptic inducer, translocates BIB to mitochondria, which initiates a sequence of events including formation of mitochondrial truncated BID, release of cytochrome c, & activation of caspase-3 thus causing cell death
- role in ion channel trafficking, directing acidic cluster- containing ion channels to distinct subcellular compartments
- interacts with BID & PKD2
Structure
belongs to the PACS family
Compartment
endoplasmic reticulum lumen, mitochondrion
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=2
Expression
- broadly expressed
- expressed in skeletal muscle > heart, brain, pancreas & testis
