psammoma body

Introduction

Concentric calcifications seen commonly in:

• meningioma
• ovarian cancer
• thyroid cancer
• spindle architecture of sarcomas
• somatostatinoma

It is thought that psammoma bodies arise from single necrotic cells calcifying with progressive aquisition of outer layers that create a lamellated configuration.
