Function

• removes amino-terminal Met from nascent proteins
  • most active when 2nd residue is Ala, Cys, Gly, Pro, Ser, Thr, or Val
• release of N-terminal amino acid residue, preferentially Met, from peptides & arylamides
• required for normal progression through the cell cycle
• associates with 60S ribosomal subunit of 80S translational complex

Cofactor:

• binds 2 Co+2 per subunit
  • enzyme is also active with Zn+2, Mn+2 or Fe+2
  • Fe+2 is likely cofactor under physiologic conditions
• binds 1 Na+ per subunit (structural role)
