Introduction

A very poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma.

Pathology

• syncytial groupings of polyhedral cells with ill-defined boundaries
• round to oval & uniformly vesicular nuclei
• prominent eosinophilic nucleoli
• amphophilic cytoplasm
• mature lymphocytes
• stroma
  • variable density
  • narrow septa of fibrovascular tissue
• necrosis may be present

Genetics

• may be associated with genomic integration of the Epstein-Barr virus
