• may play role with tastin & bystin in cell adhesion mediating attachment of blastocyst to uterine epithelial cells during embryo implantation
• role in homophilic cell adhesion
• directly binds bystin, & indirectly tastin

• strong expression at implantation sites
• found in placenta from the 6th week of pregnancy
• localized in the cytoplasm of the syncytiotrophoblast in the chorionic villi & in endometrial decidual cells at the uteroplacental interface
• after week 10, the level decreases & then disappears from placental villi
• also found in macrophages
