• expressed in the pancreaticislets of Langerhans >> gastrointestinal tract (stomach, small intestine, colon), adrenal medulla & adrenal cortex, thyroid C-cells
• in brain, expression is restricted to distinct subtypes of neurons with highest expression in the molecular layer of the cerebellum (stellate cells, basket cells), anterior pituitary gland, thalamus, hypothalamus & in a subgroup of neocortical neurons

Pathology

• detectable in human serum after ischemic neuronal damage
