Introduction
Called Bombay because it was first discovered there.
Epidemiology
more common in India than anywhere else
Pathology
- absence of fucosyltransferase-1
Genetics
- genotype: hh
- individuals express no blood group H antigens, blood group A antigens or blood group B antigens on their erythrocytes
Laboratory
- erythrocytes may initially test as type O
- serum reacts strongly with all group O erythrocytes
- serum contains anti-H antibodies
- Bombay erythrocytes will NOT react with anti-H
