Bombay phenotype

Introduction

Called Bombay because it was first discovered there.

Epidemiology

more common in India than anywhere else

Pathology

• absence of fucosyltransferase-1

Genetics

• genotype: hh
• individuals express no blood group H antigens, blood group A antigens or blood group B antigens on their erythrocytes

Laboratory

• erythrocytes may initially test as type O
• serum reacts strongly with all group O erythrocytes
  • serum contains anti-H antibodies
• Bombay erythrocytes will NOT react with anti-H
• Loincs
  • Bombay phenotype on erythrocytes
    • Bombay phenotype on erythrocytes from blood product
    • Bombay phenotype on erythrocytes from donor
