Specimen

  • aseptically aspirated body fluid
  • minimum volume:* 1 mL
  • container:
    • sterile tube with tight-fitting cap
    • specimen may be left in syring if needle is removed & the syringe is capped before transport to the laboratory

* for some specimens (i.e. peritoneal lavage), increased volumes are helpful for isolating low numbers of bacteria
