Schmorl ferric ferricyanide reduction stain

Introduction

A stain used for identifying reducing substances in tissues.

These reducing substances include:

• melanin
• argentaffin granules
• thyroid colloid
• keratin
• keratohyalin
• lipofuscin

The ferricyanide to reduced to ferrocyanide, which is converted into an insoluble Prussian Blue in the presence of ferric ions (Fe+3).
