Function
- transports L-glutamate & also L- & D-aspartate
- essential for terminating postsynaptic action of glutamate by rapidly removing released glutamate from the synaptic cleft
- acts as a symporter by cotransporting Na+
- may be astrocyte/glial glutamate/aspartate transporter in brain
Structure
- glycosylated
- belongs to the Na+:dicarboxylate (SDF) symporter (TC 2.A.23) family
Compartment
membrane
Expression
- highly expressed in cerebellum
- also found in frontal cortex, hippocampus & basal ganglia
Pathology
- defects in SLC1A3 are the cause of episodic ataxia type 6
