- highly expressed in brain & at low levels in pituitary
- also found in retina, testis & skin
- not expressed in pancreas, parotid, kidney, stomach, liver, colon, small intestine, thyroid or adrenal gland
- in pituitary, colocalizes with ACTH, suggesting that it is located in corticotrophs
