- binds heavy metals
- inhibits survival & neurite formation of cortical neurons in vitro
Structure
- belongs to the metallothionein superfamily, type 1 family
- contains 3 Zn+2 & 3 Cu+1/Cu+2 per polypeptide chain & only a negligible amount of cadmium
Expression
- abundant in a subset of astrocytes in the normal human brain
Pathology
expression reduced in Alzheimer's disease
