Heimlich maneuver

Introduction

Maneuver for opening the airway of a patient with obstruction. The patient's thighs are straddled, the heel of one hand is placed against the patient's abdomen just above the umbilicus & well below the tip of the xiphoid. The 2nd hand is place on top of the 1st & the patient's abdomen is squeezed with an upward motion rapidly 6-10 times.
