Function
- catalyzes the sulfate conjugation of many hormones, neurotransmitters, drugs & xenobiotic compounds
- sulfonation increases the water solubility of most compounds, & thus their renal excretion, but may also result in bioactivation to form active metabolites
- sulfate conjugation of:
- dopamine, small phenols such as 1-naphthol & p-nitrophenol & thyroid hormones, including 3,3'-diiodothyronine, triidothyronine, reverse triiodothyronine & thyroxine
Structure
- monomer (putative)
- belongs to the sulfotransferase 1 family
Compartment
Expression
- highly expressed in the liver, peripheral blood leukocytes, colon (mucosal lining), small intestine (jejunum) & spleen
- lesser expression in lung, placenta & thymus
