Function
- carbohydrate metabolism, hexose metabolism
- allosteric enzyme inhibited by its product Glc-6-P
ATP + D-hexose <--> ADP + D-hexose 6-phosphate
Structure
- monomer
- N- & C-terminal halves of this hexokinase show extensive sequence similarity to each other
- catalytic activity is associated with the C-terminus
- regulatory function is associated with the N-terminus
- belongs to the hexokinase family
Notes
- in vertebrates there are 4 major glucose-phosphorylating isoenzymes, designated hexokinase 1, 2, 3 & 4 (glucokinase)
