- major glycoprotein component of a variety of mucus gels
- thought to provide a protective, lubricating barrier against particles & infectious agents at mucosal surfaces
- may be involved in ligand binding & intracellular signaling

- highly O-glycosylated & probably also N-glycosylated
- contains 1 EGF-like domain
- contains 1 SEA domain

- isoform 1: membrane; single-pass membrane protein
- isoforms 2, 3, 4, 5: secreted

named isoforms=5 additional isoforms seem to exist
Expression
- broad specificity; small intestine, colon, colonic tumors, heart, liver, thymus, prostate, pancreas & gall bladder
