Function
- important role in the capacity of milk to transport Ca+2 phosphate
- not glycosylated
- heteromultimers of alpha-s1 casein & kappa-casein
Structure
Compartment
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=3
Expression
- mammary gland specific
- secreted in milk
Notes
- in milk, the alpha s1- & beta-caseins precipitate in presence of Ca+2 (so-called Ca+2-sensitive caseins)
- kappa-casein prevents the precipitation of the other caseins by Ca+2 through formation of large stable colloidal particles termed micelles
