Function
- assembly of type 2 & type 2 keratin protein complexes & formation of keratin intermediate filaments in the inner root sheath (putative)
- heterotetramer of two type 1 & two type 1 keratins
- interacts with KRT6A to form filaments (putative)

belongs to the intermediate filament family

Expression
- strongly expressed in skin & scalp
- weak expression observed in thymus & tongue
- in the hair follicle, expressed in Henle layer, Huxley layer & in the inner root sheath cuticle of the hair follicle
- expression extends from bulb region up to the point of differentiation into 3 layers
- also present in the medulla of beard hair (at protein level)
