Introduction
The most common variant of Guillain-Barre syndrome, accounting for 5% of all cases. (also see NINDS Miller Fisher Syndrome Information Page)
Etiology
- may be associated with infections, autoimmune & neoplastic disorders
Pathology
- neuromuscular transmission defects in association with anti GQ1b IgG antibody
Clinical manifestations
- ophthalmoplegia
- ataxia
- areflexia
- little weakness
Laboratory
- anti GQ1b IgG antibody titer (generally elevated)
Management
- mostly, acute, self-limiting syndrome
- anecdotal evidence of benefit with immunotherapy
