Etiology
- multiple episodes of vomiting in an otherwise healthy person[2]
- heavy alcohol use before vomiting
- hematemesis after weightlifting
- bulimia
Pathology
- a mucosal tear at the gastroesophageal junction resulting from vomiting against a closed glottis.
Clinical manifestations
- vomiting
- hematemesis (small volume in healthy patients)[2]
- most patients stop bleeding spontaneously
- recurrent bleeding is uncommon
Diagnostic procedures
Management
- supportive
- endoscopy
- arterial angiotherapy
- proton pump inhibitor[1]
