Introduction
Asplenism is the disorder that occurs after splenectomy, or autosplenectomy.
Indications
- spleen injury
- splenomegaly, hyperslenism
- hereditary spherocytosis
- immune thrombocytopenic purpura
- evaluation of lymphoma
Laboratory
- complete blood count
- may improve anemia*
* improvements in anemia may be associated with increased erythrocyte survival
- increased erythrocyte survival may result in increased HgbA1c

- 20 or 21-Valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV20 or PCV21) for patients prior to splenectomy[1]
- PCV15 followed by PPSV23 in 8 weeks is alternative[1]
