phosphate depletion syndrome

Etiology

• severe hypophosphatemia (< 1 mg/dL)

Clinical manifestations

• hematologic abnormalities
  • hemolytic anemia
  • impaired leukocyte function
  • thrombocytopenia
• central nervous system dysfunction
  • numbness
  • paresthesias
  • weakness
  • confusion
  • obtundation
  • convulsions
  • coma

Management

• oral phosphate (Neutra-Phos)
• intravenous phosphate (in an ICU setting)
• see hypophosphatemia
