Introduction

A 19 item psychiatric tool for assessing depression in geriatric patients. It is useful in circumstances when the patient is NOT able to self report (i.e. co-existing cognitive impairment).

The scale is based on an open-ended interview with the caregiver. This is followed by confirmatory patient examination

Clinical assessment Points
normal elderly: 1-8 points
moderately depressed (mean): 14 points
major depression (mean) 22 points
