Etiology
- complication of GERD
Clinical manifestations
- hoarseness
- repetitive throat clearing
- excessive pharyngeal mucous
- globus
- voice changes
- duration > 3 months
Diagnostic procedures
- laryngoscopy
- 24 hour esophageal pH monitor (ambulatory)
Differential diagnosis
Management
- proton pump inhibitor (PPI) of no benefit[1]
- acid suppression likely to prevent laryngopharyngeal injury with GERD-associated laryngopharyngeal reflux[2]
- alkaline water (pH >8.0) & a plant-based, Mediterranean diet plus standard reflux precautions no better than PPI[4]
