Introduction
Study characteristics:
- 3075 community-dwelling adults age 70-79 years
- 52% women, 42% black
Test: 400 meter walk
Outcomes:
- mortality, incident cardiovascular disease, incident mobility limitation, mobility disability
Study duration: mean of 0.9 years
Results:
- inability to walk 400 meters associated with
- higher mortality
- higher incident cardiovascular disease
- higher mobility disability
- for each additional minute needed to finish 400 meters hazzad ratios increased 1.29 for mortality, 1.20 for incident cardiovascular disease & 1.52 for mobility limitation
- lowest quartile (<5 minutes)
