purple urine bag syndrome

Etiology

• associated with urinary tract infection, alkaline urine & constipation
  • indoxyl phosphase-producing bacteria that interact with materials of urine bags & catheters
  • Providencia, Klebsiella, E coli, Morganella, Pseudomonas, Proteus, Enterococcus

Epidemiology

• rare
• occurs in patients with chronic urinary catheterization
• women > men

Clinical manifestations

• purple-colored urine, bags or tubing
