Etiology
- associated with urinary tract infection, alkaline urine & constipation
- indoxyl phosphase-producing bacteria that interact with materials of urine bags & catheters
- Providencia, Klebsiella, E coli, Morganella, Pseudomonas, Proteus, Enterococcus
Epidemiology
- rare
- occurs in patients with chronic urinary catheterization
- women > men
Clinical manifestations
- purple-colored urine, bags or tubing
