Indications
- people with leg amputations are able to control their prosthetic limbs with their brains
- allows for a smoother gait & enhanced ability to navigate obstacles[1]
- patients can walk faster, are more stable on uneven terrain, & have an increased spatial awareness, or proprioception, in their residual limb
- phantom pain is lessened too[1]
Mechanism of action
- uses sensors placed between the reconstructed amputation site & the bionic leg to transmit electrical signals to the brain
- this allows the prosthetic limb to sense its position & movement and to send this information back to the patient, enabling a sense of proprioception
