Indications

• benign prostatic hypertrophy

Procedure

• minimally invasive procedure that uses steam to shrink an enlarged prostate
• single-use scope with a 1-cm retractable needle pocked by an array of steam-emitting holes
• the scope is inserted up the urethra & releases 103 C vapor over 9 seconds
• the heat of the vapor will cause the cells of the prostate to actually die, immediately
• mean time of procedure is 4.8 min
• mean number of injections is 11
• mean duration of post-procedure catheterization is ~10 days

Notes

• improve peak urinary flow 60%
• improves post-void residual 50-60% at 3 months persisting at least 12 months
• preserves erectile function & ejaculatory function
