Indications
- radiation therapy for targeted treatment of cancer
- radium-223 is a commercially available targeted alpha therapy for treatment of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer with bone metastases
Mechanism of action
- high-energy emission of short-range alpha particles causes double-stranded DNA breaks, eliciting cell death
- short-range emission of alpha particle radiation confines cytotoxic effect to targeted lesions & surrounding microenvironment
- no known resistance mechanism to alpha particles
