Introduction
The legislative intent of the 1967 Lanterman-Petris-Short Act:
- To end the inappropriate, indefinite, & involuntary commitment of persons with mental illness, developmental disability or disability from chronic alcoholism
- to provide prompt evaluation & treatment of persons with serious mental illness or chronic alcoholism
- to protect public interest
- to safeguard individual rights through judicial review
- to provide individualized treatment, supervision, & placement services by a conservatorship program for gravely disabled persons
- to encourage the full use of all existing agencies, professional personnel & public funds to accomplish these objectives & to prevent duplication of services & unnecessary expenditures
- to protect persons with mental illness or developmental disability from criminal acts
