Epidemiology

  • 10% of elderly > 65 years of age have income below the poverty line
  • living alone more often characteristic of elderly living in poverty
  • women more often than men live in poverty
  • hispanic & black elderly more likely than whites to live in poverty
  • rates of poverty increase with age: 8.7% age 65-74, 12.7% > 85 years of age

Complications

  • current poverty is associated increased risk of mortality (RR=1.42)[3]
  • cumulative poverty (always in poverty) associated increased risk of mortality (RR=1.71)[3]
