- Keshan disease observed spreading in 1935 in rural areas of Heilongjiang province in northern China (1st reported in Keshan county)
- Keshan disease affects mostly children & women of child-bearing age
- endemic in rural northern China
- widespread selenium deficiency found in all regions of the brains examined in patients with Huntington's disease[2]
