Function
- loss of function in masticatory muscles contraction suspected for its homologs in dog & apes
- biological significance unclear since it lacks most of the domains important for the function of myosins
Structure
Expression
- specifically expressed in muscles of the head, including temporalis & tensor veli palatini
Comparative biology
- an inactivating mutation in MYH16 probably appeared 2.4 million years ago in a hominid ancestor
- the inactivation & its correlation with evolution of the skull & cranial capacity in hominids is not clear
