spinal cord concussion

Etiology

• contact sports
  • player's neck is either compressed or bent far backward or forward with great force

Pathology

• transient injury to the spinal cord that causes brief disturbance of sensation &/or ability to move

Clinical manifestations

• paresthesias in hands & feet
• weakness of extremities
• brief paralysis may occur
• episodes last < 24 hours, typically a few seconds

Management

• see cerebral concussion
