Clinical significance

• D-lactate is
  • produced by intestinal flora
  • not metabolised by mammals; elimination via renal excretion

Increases

• a sign of bacterial overgrowth in the GI tract
  • short bowel syndrome (postpoperative bacterial overgrowth)
• increases uncommon in humans, common among ruminants
  • increased with short bowel syndrome
