Epidemiology

• 3 times more common in male fetuses

Pathology

• dilation of the renal pelvis

Complications

• may be 'soft' marker for Down's syndrome

Management

• in most cases, pyelectasis resolves spontaneously during gestation without clinical manifestations
• newborns with unresolved pyelectasis may experience urological problems requiring surgery
