megacalycosis

Etiology

• malformation of the renal papillae

Pathology

• enlargement of the renal calyces without urinary tract obstruction or vesicoureteral reflux
• malformation of the renal medulla
• short collecting ducts
• number of calyces is increased.
• mild impairment of maximum urine concentration capacity

Clinical manifestations

• generally asymptomatic

Radiology

• intravenous urography:
  • enlargement of the pyelocalyceal system
  • increased number of calyces
  • dilatation of the renal pelvis is not present
  • ureter is slim
• voiding cysturethrography
  • vesicoureteral reflux is not present
• renal scintigraphy
  • normal renal function
  • prompt washout of the radionuclide

Management

• no specific treatment necessary
