Introduction

A gradient or difference in electric potential & concentration of ions across an excitable membrane set up by active transport of ions across the membrane in association with selectively permeable ion channels. The electric potential of excitable membrane is negative on the cytoplasmic face & positive on the exoplasmic face of the membrane.
