Notes

  • lower malpractice rates than outpatient medicine[1]
  • Medicare patients cared for by hospitalists in their first year of practice experience higher mortality[4]
  • hospitalists provide critical care to many ICU patients
    • 1/3 may practice beyond their ICU skill level[5]
    • U.S. graduate fellowship programs may not have enough training positions to fill the need for board-certified intensivists[5]
  • continuity of care & patient outcome are better when hospitalists work several days in a row[6]
