Etiology

• associated disorders
  • vitiligo
  • alopecia areata
  • halo moles
  • piebaldism
  • Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease
  • Alezzandrini syndrome
  • Waardenburg syndrome
  • tuberous sclerosis (60%)

Pathology

• decrease or absence of melanin in head hair, eyebrows, or eyelashes
• inherited defect in melanisation
• autoimmune destruction of the pigment cells at the base of the hair

Clinical manifestations

• decrease or absence of color in head hair, eyebrows, or eyelashes
