Etiology
- descriptor often applied to lipid crystals in synovial fluid
- the four-point cross pattern (Maltese cross) is a classic finding for calcium oxalate crystals in urine under polarized light microscopy[2]
- trophozoites appearing as multiple ring forms within RBCs forming a tetrad (maltese cross) on a Wright-stained peripheral blood smear obtained during a chill of babesiosis
