Indications
- dizziness, disequilibrium
- assessment of unilateral vestibular lesion (acoustic neuroma)
Clinical significance
- with a unilateral vestibular lesion such as acoustic neuroma, the patient's body will sway > 30 degreess toward the affected side
Procedure
- draw a circle on the floor & ask the patient to stand in the center
- blindfold the patient & ask the patient to take a few steps forward as if walking in a straight line with outstretched arms
- note the body sway as the patient takes the steps
