Fukuda stepping test

Indications

• dizziness, disequilibrium
• assessment of unilateral vestibular lesion (acoustic neuroma)

Clinical significance

• with a unilateral vestibular lesion such as acoustic neuroma, the patient's body will sway > 30 degreess toward the affected side

Procedure

• draw a circle on the floor & ask the patient to stand in the center
• blindfold the patient & ask the patient to take a few steps forward as if walking in a straight line with outstretched arms
• note the body sway as the patient takes the steps
