Bennett's fracture

Introduction

fracture of the base of the first metacarpal bone, extending into the carpometacarpal joint

Etiology

• punching a hard object
• a fall onto the thumb, such as from bicycle falls

Epidemiology

• most common type of fracture of the thumb

Pathology

• nearly always accompanied by some degree of subluxation or dislocation of the carpometacarpal joint
