Epidemiology
- endemic in the western U.S., primarily in mountainous areas
- transmitted by Ornithodoros hermsi soft ticks, which live in nests of squirrels & other rodents in coniferous forests at high elevations
- ticks can pass on the bacteria within 30 seconds of feeding on its host[1]
Pathology
- most common etiologic agent of tick-borne relapsing fever
